Datamars’ journey to lead the way for a smarter, more sustainable future for its customers, communities and the planet continues with the global business marking the certification of three major sites as using 100% renewable energy.

Datamars’ head office in Switzerland and operations hubs in New Zealand and Spain are now certified adding to ongoing efforts to embed global standard environmental management and energy efficient practices across all its major sites.

Roderick Scotto, Chief Operating Officer at Datamars says achieving renewable energy status at three major sites is an important step forward in the company’s sustainability journey and its goals to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions and impact on the environment.

“As a result of these three certifications for Switzerland, New Zealand and Spain, approximately 25% of our purchased electricity is now renewable,” Scotto says. “It’s a positive step forward however our journey to increase our use of renewable energy and improve energy efficient practices is ongoing.”

Scotto says Datamars is looking at different options to reduce emissions such as the on-site production of renewable energy however what and where it invests in will depend on several factors including the local market’s energy infrastructure and climate, as well as the specific patterns and sources of energy consumption at each operation.

Presently Datamars is seeking to understand these unique factors through independent energy audits across key sites.

“Our energy audits will provide us with a deeper view of energy usage and opportunities so we can focus investment where we know it will make a measurable difference,” Scotto explains. “The findings will feed into energy decarbonisation programmes as part of our wider net zero strategy with a focus on our major production operations in Thailand, North America, and Slovakia.

“Just as importantly, alongside this we are committed to having all our main production sites ISO14001 environmental management certified, and ISO50001 energy management certified by 2025. This will help us embed broader environmental and energy efficient practices in our ways of working. So far, we have four major sites ISO14001 certified, and two more underway. And we have three key sites underway with their preparation for ISO50001. We know too that driving meaningful improvement needs to be part of our mindset and behaviours – our culture – and that is another important focus within our business.”

Scotto says with the effects of climate change felt by so many, Datamars is also focused on providing its agricultural, animal and textile sector customers with valuable information and tools that will help them drive good decisions and better manage impacts in their businesses.

“For example, we know that an environment with less greenhouse gas emissions and a steady global temperature could lead to more favourable conditions for our livestock producer customers who are already facing the impact of rising temperatures through drought, heat waves, floods, soil erosion, animal health issues and disease — all of which affect productivity and global food security,” he says.

“In our livestock business this includes helping minimize the use of scarce resources such as land, water, and feed, while maximizing animal wellbeing and productivity. In our textile business this is enabled through technology that supports effective recycling and reuse of textiles, including fashion and workwear.

“We know we also need to carefully manage our own direct impacts as a business and use data and insights to help us make informed decisions. And for us, having one quarter of our energy certification as renewable energy is progress in the right direction.”
