WHAT IS THE “RFID”?

RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) uses electromagnetic fields to wirelessly read tags attached to textiles in order to identify and track them automatically.

An RFID tag can be thought as a “wireless USB memory stick”: it’s attached by the manufacturer and travels with the textile throughout its life, carrying electronically stored information that can be remotely read.

An RFID system comprises, in fact, in addition to the tags that carry the data, a reader and its associated antenna. The reader transmits a low-power radio signal through its antenna, which is received by the tag via its own antenna to power an integrated circuit (chip). Using the energy it gets from the signal when it enters the radio field, the tag will briefly converse with the reader for verification and exchange data. Once the data is received by the reader, it is then sent to a controlling computer for processing and management. Total time needed: just few milliseconds!
